Which brings us to the final track… Cat dreams…
almost a nightmare!
…at least in “problem child” terms, that is the amount of time spent on trying different arrangement and instrumentation ideas. In its time this track has had vocals and lyrics (including multiple harmonies), funky clavinet, and even a horn section! In the end I pared it down to its original basic idea…a cooking rhythm section (as usual Tony Floyd on drums and Steve Hadley on Fender bass with my trademark funky nylon string rhythm guitar) and dual lead nylon string guitars left and right sharing the melody with occasional harmonies. The only other colour comes from Bruce Haymes, some more of Bruce’s typically just right parts. Entering on the first chorus and underpinning the whole vibe of the rest of the track is his very moody Hammond organ, and later on in the break-downs his Wurlitzer-style electric piano is heard.
This sparseness gives the rather odd atmosphere and trance-like pace a chance to fully emerge, as well as leaving plenty of air around Bruce’s organ ad-libs and Tony’s drum breaks. In the end I think the Cat got his dreams
